If no information exists, we begin by interviewing the subject matter experts - engineers, system analysts, developers, sales and marketing people - whoever they may be.

Identifying the target audience means asking two questions: What do the readers already know about the product? How will they use the information we convey to them?

From this background information, we work with the client and potential users to develop a concept, then an outline, then the finished print or electronic publication.

As professional communicators, we have the advantage of understanding the communication field itself. We may be new to a particular process or product, but we're quick learners. Being new to the process or product (as the clients users will be), we have a very good idea of the kinds of questions readers will ask, and we have the experience to quickly get at the answers.
